How To Start A Food Blog In Three Easy Steps

Step One: Choose your Blog Focus & Blog Name
The first task is to determine what the focus of your food blog will be. This can be anything and doesn’t have to be niche. Your focus can be broad, but should be something you:
- Can sustain (both your interest & recipe ideas)
- Have a passion for!
When I first started blogging, I wanted to go with this idea I had in college, where I would create recipes you could make using only what you had in a dorm room. Since I do not live in a dorm room anymore, and do not enjoy making foods exclusively in the microwave, this was not sustainable for me.

Next, come up with a name and check in the box below to see if a website using that name already exists. A name I originally wanted was “Just A Bite”, but that was taken. You may have to try a few variations of what you want to find something that hasn’t been taken yet. Be creative!
Step Two: Register for a Domain & Hosting
When starting a blog, you can go the hosted route or unhosted. I tried the unhosted way for awhile using tumblr. While I like tumblr, it didn’t meet my needs for my blog. I wanted more control over style, plugins, etc. In order to achieve that, I moved my blog to WordPress.org and brought in Bluehost as my hosting company.
Registering for a domain & hosting is pretty easy. Depending on what company you go with, you can get your domain name for free!
As I mentioned above, my website is hosted by Bluehost. I’ve used them the last two years, and have had a really great experience with them. Anytime I’ve had a question or issue, their team has been super responsive. Click any of my Bluehost links, and you can get a free domain and hosting starting as low as 3.95 / month!
Go to Bluehost and select “Get Started Now”
Next, you’ll want to pick your hosting package.
Then, you’ll enter the domain name you selected (or the one you already own).
Finally, you’ll create your account!
Once your account has been created, you will receive a welcome email from Bluehost.
Step Three: Install WordPress & Select a Theme
Go back to Bluehost.com & select the login button in the upper left hand corner. Login with the credentials you received from your welcome email.
When you’ve logged in, scroll down to the “website” section and select the “Install WordPress” icon.
After clicking the button, you will be taken to a new page. Click the “start” button to get the process started.
On the next page, you’ll be asked to enter the following information:
- Domain name: Enter the domain name you picked and select the box “check domain”.
- Site Name or Title: What you want to call your blog (ex: Just A Little Bite).
- Admin Username & Password: the username and password you will use to login to your website.
- Admin Email Address: The email address you will use for all your website related communication. I would recommend registering for a google address for your site (ex: [email protected]).
- Read & agree to the terms.
Select the “install now” button!
Now you’re ready to login to your WordPress dashboard. Go to your url/wp-admin (ex: www.justalittlebite.com/wp-admin). Select “Log in with username and password”
Enter your log in and password. Select “Log In”
The next step is to pick a theme for your website. The theme provides the look and layout for your site. Installing one is super easy, and there are tons to choose from. You can buy one, or select a free one. When I first set my site up, I used the free “Sugar & Spice” theme.
Once you’ve logged in to your wordpress dashboard, select “Appearance” and then “Themes” from the left hand tool bar.
Click “WordPress.org Themes”. Here you can browse the various themes available and filter to find the one that works best for you.
When you’ve chosen your theme, click the “install” button in the bottom of the box. After it’s been installed, click “activate”.
Once installed, you can customize the appearance by selecting “Appearance” in the left hand side bar.
That’s it! You’re ready to start blogging!
