Why can’t I lose weight in ketosis?

There are certain foods that will help you lose weight, and there are other foods that will not. It is important to find out which foods can positively impact your weight loss efforts. By learning what foods promote weight loss and which foods will not, you can make better food choices.

Lots of people have achieved amazing weight-loss results while in a state of nutritional ketosis. But, what’s the big deal about this state of nutritional ketosis? Is it really that much different than eating a low-carb, high-fat, “fat-adapted” diet? When you eat a high-fat low-carb diet, you get a lot of the benefits of eating a low-carb diet, such as lower blood glucose, improved insulin sensitivity and other health benefits.

Of foods in any form, ketogenic or not, the only one that seems to consistently result in weight loss is fat loss. Fat is so satiating that it suppresses appetite, which is why it’s so common to see weight loss during a calorie deficit solely from fat loss. You can easily lose weight in a ketogenic diet by keeping carbs low, and you can easily go above the recommended amount of carbs that you should be eating to lose weight.. Why am I unable to lose weight when in ketosis? How do you properly count carbs? And why do individuals gain weight when they fast for a long time?

In this week’s conversation with Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt, read the answers:

Why am I unable to lose weight when in ketosis?

For the last two weeks, I’ve been on a low-carb diet. I dropped seven pounds (three kilos). I’m in a lot of pain! Carbohydrates are kept to a minimum of 20 grams. For breakfast, I had hard boiled eggs and bacon with black coffee. Dinner will consist of the same cheese snack, celery, and 3 oz. (85g) roast chicken (with olive oil). My ketone levels are in the middle range. In the evening, use anti-inflammatory medications, antidepressants, thyroid medicine (if underactive), and gabapentin.

Beth

Hi, Beth!

You’re on the right track. It’s quite normal to gain 3 kg in a fortnight. Maintain your efforts, and you will ultimately reduce the excess weight.

Stop munching if you want to lose weight faster (but eat enough to feel full after meals).

Here are a few more pointers that may be useful:

Andreas Eenfeldt, please accept my heartfelt greetings.

How to properly count carbs

Should you count total carbs or net carbs (total carbs – fiber)? There are many opinions on this, and I see on this site that you should count net carbs, which I do, but I noticed that your new recipe writer Christy (in her Facebook group) only gives total carbs, while her recipes here give net carbs in the nutrition information.

Although Dr. Westman speaks about total carbohydrates on his websites, he provides pure carbs in the New Atkins book for the new me. It’s perplexing. Looking at your photo of 20g carbohydrates in two distinct forms (whole wheat versus rolls), it should be 20g pure carbs on the plate, not 35g or 40g total carbs. Please elaborate on this!

Thank you very much. Robin

Counting net carbohydrates makes more sense to me. Fibrous carbohydrates are not an issue when it comes to losing weight or treating diabetes, for example.

Aiming for a total carbohydrate count of no more than 20 grams, on the other hand, is even more strict, challenging, and effective. However, if you do B, for example, you may have the same outcome. To concentrate on the basics, aim for 14 grams of pure carbs. Do you understand what I’m saying?

Andreas Eenfeldt, please accept my heartfelt greetings.

Fasting for 72 hours and gaining weight?

For nearly three months, I’ve been on a ketogenic diet. I maintain a food journal and limit myself to fewer than 20 grams of carbohydrates each day. I didn’t lose weight; instead, I gained weight by fasting with water. Although I have ketones, my blood sugar remains at 80 mg/dl (4.4 mmol/l). Ketones had a concentration of 0.5. They’re at 1.6 now that I’m fasting.

Marsha

Intermittent fasting is a great way to lose weight quickly. In general, I don’t suggest fasting for more than 24 hours unless you’re sure you’re doing it well or are under the care of a doctor. Shorter fasts, performed more often, may typically produce nearly as excellent outcomes with fewer side effects (e.g. loss of lean mass), e.g. most days 16:8.

Andreas Eenfeldt, please accept my heartfelt greetings.

Keto dieting is a popular way to lose weight—but does it work? First, let’s clear up the confusion about ketosis itself. For those that aren’t familiar with this diet, it’s when the body is in a state of ketosis that produces ketones, also known as ketone bodies. Ketones are essentially forms of alternative energy that the body can use to directly fuel its tissues and organs. When this occurs, the body typically will start using its fat as a source of energy.. Read more about not losing weight on keto insulin resistance and let us know what you think.
