Best Italian Seasoning

Since I don’t live in Italy, I don’t know if there is such a thing as “the best Italian seasoning”. However, I’ve heard that the best Italian seasonings can be found in Apulia, a region on the southern coast of Italy, but that will be the subject of another if/when this challenge is completed.

The best Italian seasoning is the one that you like most. If you like the taste, use it. If you like it because of the flavor, use it. If you can’t decide, use it all.

This spice is an essential component of our handmade pizza dough. We started with a store-bought spice but soon realized how much we wanted to change the flavor… maybe a bit more oregano and less rosemary, for example. We came up with the ideal answer, which we currently include into a range of our dishes.

What may I use in place of Marjoram?

Marjoram is an ingredient I’ve never cooked with before, so I wouldn’t be shocked if you don’t have it on your spice rack right now. If you run out of this particular spice or just don’t have any, simply replace it with more oregano and you’ll be fine. Marjoram is a member of the oregano family of herbs. However, since oregano is a bit stronger than marjoram, we suggest using a teaspoon or two less than the recipe asks for. The issue has been resolved.

This Italian spice is used in a variety of recipes. It’s delicious in soups, pasta sauces, and on any kind of meat, but it’s particularly good on chicken when creating our chicken bacon zoodles. It’s delicious without being overpowering, and it adds just the right amount of zing to whatever meal it’s added to. We often double recipes to create a big batch (we do this for the majority of our pantry items!). We’ve discovered that you can never have too much.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons oregano
  • 1 tablespoon marjoram
  • 1 tablespoon thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon rosemary

Instructions

  1. In a mixing dish, combine all of the measured ingredients.
  2. To mix, stir everything together.
  3. For storage, place in an airtight container.
