Dairy Free Mexican Hot Cocoa |

If you are lactose intolerant or vegan, this recipe is for you! Dairy free hot cocoa with a little Mexican flavor. This is just as easy as any regular hot cocoa recipe, but is dairy-free and quite delicious.

In the state that Texas is in, it’s no surprise that I’ve developed a love for anything and everything Tex-Mex. While I love my fair share of Mexican cuisine, I’ve always felt a little guilty about the fact that I can’t eat burritos because of my dairy allergy. Recently, I started experimenting with making my own Mexican Hot cocoa to see if I could make a vegan version that tasted just as good as the real thing. The results were great, and I’m hoping to start selling hot cocoa at some of my future events.

I have been a dairy free vegan for about three years now. My passion for health and wellness drove me to quit dairy and cut out all processed foods. I just couldn’t stomach any more milk-based products, and I knew it was time I started to change my lifestyle to a healthier version.

Cinnamon and chocolate tastes abound in this dairy-free Mexican hot cocoa. I also give dairy instructions if you prefer milk.

The two cups of hot chocolate in the picture have different hues, as you can see. The one in the front is a dairy-free variant made with oat milk that appears more chocolaty, while the one behind it is prepared with full milk. I wanted to test both variations to ensure that the recipe could be used with both dairy and non-dairy milk. The dairy version is creamier, and I found that I needed to add a little more cocoa powder to boost the chocolate flavor.

What Gives This Hot Cocoa Its Mexican Flavor?

It’s made using Mexican cinnamon sticks, which provide a layer of warmth and spice to your standard hot chocolate. I was fortunate to locate Mexican cinnamon sticks at my local grocery shop, but ordinary cinnamon sticks may also be used.

This Mexican hot chocolate is just as simple to prepare as the’ready-made’ version, but without the preservatives and unpronounceable components. You may quadruple the recipe as required and experiment with various flavor combinations, such as peppermint extract or a boozy version with a dash of tequila or Jameson. It will definitely warm you up!

What Type of Dairy-Free Milk Is Most Effective?

For this dish, I used extra creamy oat milk, which tastes quite similar to normal milk. I’ve also discovered that if the dairy-free milk has oil, it aids in the creation of a smooth consistency.

Keep in mind that if your dairy-free milk already sweetened, you’ll only need a little amount of sugar. It is always preferable to add more afterwards.

to finish it off

Don’t forget about the toppings! For mine, I used dairy-free whipped cream and tiny marshmallows for my kids. Serve with cinnamon sticks, cinnamon powder, or chocolate shavings as a garnish.
