Herring fish fry

When the season for herring fish is upon us, the urge to make herring fish fry is great. Those of you who are familiar with the small Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) will know that it is an oily fish, but it is not oily in the same way that fish oil is. Herring fish oil is a source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential and important to the human body. Fatty fish like herring are also a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals, which make them an attractive food source.

Every year, on the third weekend in July, more than a million people from all over the northeast converge on the shores of Boston’s Charlestown, MA to enjoy a taste of the past. Known as the “herring fry,” this annual event celebrates the traditional American tradition of herring fishing in Boston Harbor.

The weekend is here, and it is time for a delicious seafood dinner. If you have never purchased a herring fish fry, you are in for a treat. Herring fish is a white fish that is highly sought after at the market. It is available year round in many different forms.

Herring fish and sardine (mathi meen in Tamil) are quite similar, and many people mistake the two. These fish are termed sardine (mathi meen in Tamil) when they are young and tiny, and herring fish when they are older and larger. Herring is not as well-known as sardine. You may buy it from any local fishmonger or from a supermarket. This was purchased from Tesco and is extremely fresh seafood. I like experimenting with various kinds of fish and their flavors. The only issue with this fish is that it contains a lot of small bones, as you can see in the photo. You can debone the fish and use it as a fillet, but I cooked it with the bones. I purchased 1kg of herring fish and prepared a delicious fish curry and shallow fried for myself. Sea bass, tilapia, mackerel, king fish, or any other fish you choose may be used.

Herring and sardines (Mathi meen in Tamil) are excellent for humans because they contain a lot of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which are also necessary for proper brain development and function. Omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish oil may help those with high cholesterol, diabetes, breast cancer, memory loss, and depression.

Ingredients

  • 500 gram Herring Fish
  • 3 tsp wheat flour (optional) (pillsbury, used for chapathi)
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon pepper powder
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  • season with salt to taste
  • 1 tsp. oil
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 3–4 tbsp water, depending on the situation
  • For frying, oil
  • Other marinades, such as those featured in my previous fish fry recipes, may be used.

Method

Marinate

    • In a larger dish or plate, combine all of the ingredients to create a nice thick paste, including wheat flour, chili powder, salt, turmeric powder, and everything else. Mix well, then add water to produce a thick mixture that isn’t too tight or dry.
    • You may either leave the fish whole or chop it in half.
    • Apply the marinade to the fish, making sure it is thoroughly coated.
    • Refrigerate it for at least 2 hours, covered with a lid or cling film.
    • Prepare it half an hour ahead of time and then fried it.

Fish is fried.

  • Preheat the pan or kadai with enough oil for shallow frying and, once hot, add the marinated fish pieces one at a time, cooking them in batches.
  • If you flip the fish right away, the coating will fall off with it.
  • After a few minutes, flip the fish pieces over and wait 3 to 4 minutes.
  • Cook the fish until it is well cooked and the coating has become a dark crimson color and is crunchy.
  • In the meanwhile, flip the fish and cook it. Cook the fish in a uniform manner. Also, don’t flip the fish too many times. The fish cooks quickly.
  • The fish gets firm after it has been fried.
  • Fry the fish in batches and place it in a dish or platter when done.
  • It will take 10 to 12 minutes to fry, depending on its size, over medium heat.
  • It goes well with rice and fish curry, as well as basic rasam and dal.

Notes

  • When rotating the fish, try to use tongs.
  • Only flip the fish once it has been cooked on one side.
  • You may alternatively cook the fish on the tava, as shown in my earlier fish fry recipe.
  • Only place the fish on the tava when the oil is hot; otherwise, the masala will cling to the pan and spill out.
  • Once the oil is heated, cook it over medium heat, not high.

The New England coast is one of the purest harbors of America’s herring industry. There is a commitment to preserving the clean waters, and it seems everyone is on the same page. In fact, the town of Groton, New Hampshire has instituted a year-round ban on the sale of herring to the public. It is illegal for anyone to sell or serve herring in the town. Even if you are a Groton resident, you are not allowed to buy herring from any other source.. Read more about how to cook herring in oatmeal and let us know what you think.
