Thai Wonton and Vegetable Soup | | Thai Recipes

We all love Thai food, right? I mean, this is the Thai version of comfort food….

You have a tasty dinner, but you’re not sure if you can finish it. The problem is that the restaurant is almost empty. You ask yourself, “Is the food worth it if there’s no one to taste it?” The answer is both yes and no. If you have a little extra room in your stomach, then it’s definitely worth the price. Thai food is good, but it can be very spicy, and spicy food can lead to uncomfortable stomachaches, but there are many dishes that are both spicy and delicious.

Thai food is some of the most authentic cuisines in the world, and with a growing appetite for it in the UK,  there are plenty of places now that offer an authentic Thai dining experience.

This vegetable-packed soup is elevated with homemade wontons.

Making homemade wontons may seem difficult at first, but it’s really very simple after you’ve prepared a few. Once you’ve mastered the technique, feel free to experiment with other filling combinations.

This is a simple Thai Wontons dish that we’re serving in a vegetable-packed soup.

Substitutes and Ingredients

Wonton wrappers, also known as round Gyoza skins, are what I utilize in the movie. Both varieties can be found in an Asian market, but I was also able to locate them at a local grocery shop.

To avoid drying out the wrappers, keep them in the packaging until you’re ready to use them. Thaw the wonton wrappers overnight in the refrigerator if they are frozen.

Ground Pork is my preferred filling, although ground chicken or shrimp are other popular options.

Soy sauce, minced garlic, and chopped cilantro leaves and stems are combined with ground pork. Mix everything together well to ensure that everything is equally distributed.

Vegetables- To make this soup a full dinner, I included a lot of vegetables. The majority of Thai Wonton soups include just broth and wontons.

Cabbage, carrots, zucchini, broccoli, and white onion are all included in this soup. However, you may add any kind of vegetable or leave them out for a simple wonton soup.

This soup may be made with either vegetarian or chicken broth. Don’t depend on the soup’s taste to come from the veggies. We’re just going to cook them for a few minutes, just until they’re soft.

If you cook them for too long, they will get mushy. The same may be said for the wontons.

Wonton Folding Instructions

See how I prepare the soup and fold the wontons in this video. A lengthier YouTube video may be seen at the bottom of this article.

Begin by putting the filling in the center of the wonton wrapper and rubbing it around the whole edge with your finger dipped in water. You’ll need additional water to seal the wrappers if they’re drying out.

Fold the paper in half to form a half-seal and press any air pockets out. You may either leave the wontons half-sealed or pleat them at the top. The pleats don’t have to be precise since they’ll be cooked and wrinkled.

How to Make Wonton Soup with Vegetables

We’ll cook the wontons separately since they’ll start to fall apart if we boil them for too long.

Bring a small saucepan of water to a boil and drop in your wontons. Because the filling is uncooked, they will need to boil for at least 5 minutes. Remove the cooked chicken and put it in a basin.

Bring the vegetables and soup broth to a boil in a medium/large soup pot. For added umami taste, I use coconut aminos or soy sauce.

Simmer for 5 minutes over a medium heat, or until the vegetables are somewhat soft but still have some bite.

To serve, pour the soup, vegetables, and wontons into serving dishes. I make approximately 5-6 wontons each person on average.

For more spice, add a pinch of white pepper, a squeeze of lime/lemon, or a drizzle of hot chile oil.

Is it possible to prepare the soup ahead of time?

This soup is best served immediately, but if you need to prepare ahead of time, chop all of your vegetables and keep them in a jar for up to a day.

The wontons may be prepared ahead of time and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a day, or frozen for up to three months.

This is perfect for fast soups and snacks. Keep in mind that if the wontons are frozen, they will need to be boiled for a few minutes longer to be fully cooked.

Instructions

Wontons cooked from scratch

  • Combine ground pork, chopped cilantro, and soy sauce in a large mixing bowl. To keep wonton wrappers from drying out, place them in a bag or cover them with a cloth. For the ‘glue,’ use a small dish of water.

  • To learn how to fold wontons, watch the video above. Fill wonton wrapper halfway with filling, seal edges with water, then fold over to form a half seal. Any air pockets should be pushed out, and the edges should be bonded together. You may either leave it as is or pleat it. After boiling, the wontons will wrinkle, so they don’t have to be flawless.

  • To prepare the pork, place the wontons in a small saucepan of boiling water and simmer for at least 5 minutes. Remove the chicken and put it in serving dishes.

Soup Base

  • Bring vegetable or chicken broth to a boil in a big saucepan. Combine all of your chopped veggies, as well as soy sauce or coconut aminos, in a large mixing bowl. Cook for 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are cooked but still have some crunch. If you boil them for too long, the vegetables will get mushy. Taste to determine if more salt or soy sauce is required. Place the wontons in dishes with the broth and veggies. Before serving, season with a pinch of white pepper, chile oil, or a squeeze of lime/lemon.

This is a simple dish, but it is a great way to use up stale wonton wrappers, sucrine veg and meaty mushrooms. This dish is very good with a small amount of white rice, and this is an excellent way to use up any left-over meat from the night before..
