One of my favorite tricks is to substitute a good quality butter for shortening several times in a recipe. This is especially true when you’re using an easy butter cake recipe like this one.

This dish also contains a hidden ingredient that reminds me of my childhood and may be something you’ve never seen before!
What makes a crumb cake different from a coffee cake?
This is a fantastic query! Coffee cake is usually prepared with a thicker layer of cake and less topping, while crumb cake is best made with a thinner layer of cake and a thick layer of crumbles on top!
What is Dream Whip, exactly?
General Mills invented Dream Whip in the 1950s to make homemade whipped topping easier. It’s powdered and comes in a box, and it’s typically combined with milk and vanilla. We’ll simply use the powder, unmixed, in this recipe. It’s usually found alongside the jello or boxed cake mixes in the baking section of most supermarkets.
The following are the ingredients for our Classic Crumb Cake:
To make the cake:
- 1 box yellow cake mix (Duncan Heinz)
- 4 eggs
- 1.3 ounce dream whip envelope
- 1 quart of water
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
To make the crumbs:
- 4 melted butter/margarine sticks
- 3 tsp vanilla extract extract
- flour (four cups)
- a third cup of sugar
- a third of a teaspoon of cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon of salt
To create our Classic Crumb Cake, follow these steps:
Preheat the oven to 325 F and raise the shelf one notch above the middle.
In a mixing dish, combine yellow cake mix, Dream Whip, water, vanilla, and eggs.
3-4 minutes on medium speed with an electric mixer Break up all of the cake pieces and stir until the mixture has a lovely, creamy consistency.
Pour onto a greased baking dish. If you don’t have a 12-by-18-by-2-inch pan, divide the amount between two 9-by-13-inch pans. After the cake has baked, you don’t want it to be too thick!
After that, bake for 20-25 minutes and set aside for 5 minutes. You may begin preparing the crumble mixture while the cake is baking.
Next, add melted butter, vanilla, flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a large mixing dish. Stir slowly and thoroughly. It’s possible that you’ll have to stir it with your hands to make sure it’s completely blended. This is going to be a hefty one.
Add crumbs to the whole cake with your fingers, rolling them into tiny pieces. There should be enough crumbs to completely cover the cake. I prefer to start with a foundation layer of crumbs, then go back and fill in any gaps or thin areas. Use the whole crumbs bowl.
Return the pan to the oven once the crumbs have completely coated the cake and bake for another 20 minutes!
Remove from the oven and, if desired, gently sprinkle with powdered sugar. Enjoy!
Nothing beats the sight of this delectable cake on the kitchen table for morning. Even though this cake serves a large number of people, it never lasts long in our home! It’s such a unique and enjoyable surprise for the kids (and grownups!) We hope you love this recipe as much as we have over the years and will continue to do so in the future!
