The Jamaican Way of Carrot and Beetroot
Sunday supper is unique to Jamaicans because we spend the most of the day preparing meat or fish to serve with rice and salad. Then we ended with a lovely glass of one of our favorite beverages.
One of our favorite juices is carrot and beetroot, which goes well with our Sunday meals.
On Sundays, I’ve always looked forward to dinner time, not only because of the delicious meals my grandmother prepared, but also because of the juices she prepared, one of which was carrot and beetroot.
What You Will Require
Here’s everything you’ll need to make this carrot and beet juice: Carrot, unsweetened beetroot milk, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla, nutmeg, and cinnamon
I used unsweetened almond milk, but you may use whatever unsweetened milk you want. Water may be used in lieu of the milk, which is how my grandma used to make it.
How to Prepare Beet and Carrot Juice
In just a few easy steps, you can make this carrot and beetroot drink. Wash and peel the carrots and beets first, then cut them into chucks before putting them in the blender. Three-inch chucks should enough, depending on how strong your blender is.
In a blender, combine the milk (or water) and mix until smooth. Using a fine mesh strainer, strain the mixture. The pieces may also be left in. I used to like nibbling on the carrot and beetroot bits as a child.
Variations
Before blending, the carrot and beetroot are cooked for a few minutes. This was how my grandma prepared the drink most of the time. However, I’ve come to dislike the flavor of veggies that have been cooked before being blended.
If you want to attempt the recipe this way, boil the carrots and beets in water and then mix them with the same water. Then you’d add condensed milk to sweeten it up.
To enhance the drink a kick, some Jamaicans add dragon stout or Guinness. Keep in mind that both are alcoholic drinks, therefore this version is not suitable for minors.
Except for the condensed milk, this recipe is almost entirely vegan; however, if you want a vegan version, you may use your favorite vegan sweetener or this vegan condensed milk.
