In 2 years, I will renew my personal training license and become a certified personal trainer (PT) in California. This is a big deal for me—I’ve been working on this for the last 2 years, and I’ve decided to take the plunge. I’ve been studying personal training for the last 2 years and this is totally new territory for me: I’ve never worked with clients before.

The average American spends more than $1,000 on personal training every year. But while we love the idea of working with a trainer to help us reach our fitness goals, we also recognize that current trends indicate that personal training is on the way out. The market for personal trainers is getting flat, and as a result, education and certification are becoming increasingly important. This doesn’t mean that you have to be an expert in exercise science and physiology, but it does mean that you will need to be able to demonstrate your understanding of the fundamentals of fitness training.

The personal trainer, by most definitions, is a physical fitness professional who is trained in the art of helping people improve their fitness. Today, this means they’re trained in technology. Personal trainers help their clients with everything from the basic weight exercises to more advanced ones such as running, cycling, boxing and swimming. They also advise their clients on how to eat, sleep, and train.

We have two options as personal training evolves — and it is evolving fast.

We may continue to operate as “normal trainers,” guiding customers through exercises, but our business and purpose may ultimately be lost.

Alternatively, we may utilize nutrition counseling, fitness teaching, and change psychology to help our clients and ourselves live more fulfilling lives.

We’re not personal trainers, so don’t expect us to help you get in shape.

We are neither “personal trainers,” “strength coaches,” or “nutritionists,” despite what our business cards state. No, you and I are the ones that change our bodies.

We utilize things like exercise and diet to make a difference in people’s lives. And that reality has much greater impact.

Consider the last time you received a customer…

Were they looking for a fitness program? Most likely, the answer is no. It’s rare that someone walks into the gym and says, “I’d like to perform squats and push-ups.”

Despite the fact that this is not what the customer requested, most trainers and coaches just create a program and take their clients through a few exercises each week.

Change is what 99 percent of customers want. If you pay attention, you’ll hear it every time they walk through our front doors.

They seek to transform their bodies from their present condition to their idealized image of the “ideal body.” They’re asking for your assistance in doing so.

Consider the significance of this request. Consider how much faith they have in you. Consider the pressure you’ll be under to achieve that outcome – it’ll make any trainer anxious.

However, this isn’t the case.

You CAN bring about the transformation your customer desires.

You can bring that change to every single individual that comes through your door if you have the proper tools and knowledge.

That is the reality. However, you won’t be able to do this by concentrating only on one element of body change. You won’t be able to accomplish it if you call yourself a “personal trainer.”

No, to get significant outcomes, you must assist your clients in managing their exercise when they are with you as well as their life when they are not with you.

Exercise isn’t sufficient on its own.

Let’s not kid ourselves: exercise is an essential part of body change. But what does your customer spend the other 165 hours of the week doing? Eating.

That’s why a workout regimen alone will never be adequate to witness true physical change. That’s why, as a fitness expert, understanding how to alter your customers’ eating habits is the most valuable asset you can have.

In five years, understanding how to assist your customers alter their eating habits will be the difference between a “personal trainer” and someone who transforms lives.

And, as easy as it may seem, you must stop thinking of yourself as a “personal trainer” if you wish to be the latter. You are a “life changer” from now on.

The next step after establishing your position and purpose is to understand how to coach nutrition.

Why aren’t you doing nutrition coaching right now?

Most personal trainers believe they are unqualified to assist their customers in changing their dietary habits. The majority of them offer the following reasons:

1. “I am not a registered dietitian.”

(It doesn’t matter; just a handful of dietitians are educated in exercise nutrition.)

2. “Giving nutritional advice is against the law.”

(No, it isn’t.) You won’t be able to provide medical nutrition treatment, but you will be able to provide advise to active individuals.)

3. “That is not my area of expertise.”

(After all, why not?) It most definitely should be. It will have to be in 5 years.)

Your capacity to adjust and develop as a professional is hampered by all of these reactions. The body transformation business is changing so rapidly that the existing concept of “personal trainer” will be obsolete in the near future.

Take a look at how far personal training has progressed so far…

I had supper with a buddy who is a well-known physical therapist a few months ago. I won’t say who he is, but he’s essentially “the man” who brought physical therapy to the fitness business.

Because to his perseverance and methods, trainers all over the globe now utilize movement screens to evaluate their clients’ requirements and perform remedial workouts to keep them injury-free.

It wasn’t always like this, however. Movement screens and corrective exercise were formerly thought to be “outside the scope” of personal training. Does this ring a bell?

People used to say things like, “I’m not a physical therapist,” “It’s unlawful to offer physical therapy advice,” and “I’m not a physical therapist.” and “That’s not my area of expertise.”

That, however, is ancient news. You’re now regarded obsolete and behind the times if you don’t use corrective exercise and movement screening in your practice.

So, what do you think the next big thing in personal training will be? Nutritional guidance is available.

Now, I’m not suggesting that personal trainers should spend ten years in school to become full-fledged nutritional biochemists. Nutritional biochemists, on the other hand, are often unqualified to advise nutrition.

What I mean is that if you want to be in the fitness industry for the next five years, you need to know about nutrition coaching. In reality, habit-based nutrition’s real-world application is the “missing piece” in the body transformation jigsaw.

And it’s a subject that doesn’t require a doctorate or a PhD to grasp.

But I don’t believe I’m qualified to perform a decent job…

“I simply don’t believe I know enough to do a decent job,” says one less-commonly stated reason for not incorporating nutrition in the personal training environment.

I can relate to this since I felt the same way when I first started out. There were just two choices for learning more about nutrition when I wanted to do something about it 15 years ago.

Higher education is the first option.

This choice requires you to dedicate your whole professional career to studying nutrition. This entails obtaining undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as attending many seminars. In essence, you spend ten years of your life to establishing yourself as “the nutrition expert.”

This is, of course, the path I took. And, although I wouldn’t trade it for the world, it cost me over $100,000 in tuition and costs, as well as ten years of my life. Not everyone is willing or capable of taking this path.

Option 2 is to attend a weekend seminar.

The second alternative is attending a weekend “nutrition certification course” and receiving a rubber stamp of approval that, to be honest, is worthless. Sure, you’ve earned the “nutrition” badge. However, you do not believe you have gained much knowledge.

This choice, obviously, is a waste of time for me. It’s unlikely to help you become a better “life changer.” And you’ll probably feel a bit self-conscious about flaunting your weekend certification certificate.

The Certification is the third choice.

Times have changed, and the two choices listed above are no longer the sole methods to establish a solid nutritional foundation. There is now a third option: Certification.
