Debbie recognized she no longer had the motivation to lose weight after a lifetime of yo-yo dieting. Fortunately, her doctor recommended her to try the keto diet at least once. This is how it went down:

Hello, here is my tale; it’s a lengthy one, but I’m 62 years old. I’m writing this tale for myself, to hold me accountable. I can’t tell you how many different diets I’ve tried since I was in elementary school.

I was a miserable kid until I had my tonsils removed at the age of five. Milkshakes and ice cream are typically what my folks serve me. Let me tell you, after I was feeling better, they provided me everything I needed! My parents were both overweight, and we are Jewish, so you know what that entails. My grandma was a normal Jewish grandmother who believed that if you don’t eat, you would starve. I became the family’s little chubby boy.

When I was three years old, my parents split. My mother was a young woman who gave us potatoes, rice, and noodles since that was all she could afford. Is there anything more I can say? My mother dropped out because she didn’t want me to go through what she did as a kid. When I was younger, I began yo-yo dieting.

Because none of my sisters had a weight issue, there was always junk food in the home (I became a voracious eater). My mother constantly brought me to the doctor, who placed me on a diet. I continued to gain weight. I was approximately 23 kg overweight while I was in high school.

Fasting – The Ultimate Diet was featured in Cosmopolitan magazine when I was 21, and of course, I wanted to try it. When I was working as a chef in a fast food truck (the first one off the production line 43 years ago), I fasted for 42 days and smoked two packs of cigarettes each day. I dropped approximately 23 pounds before becoming pregnant with my first child. As a result, I needed to begin eating and quitting smoking as soon as possible. You might probably guess what happened as a result. I regained all of my weight, plus an additional 16 kg. My explanation was that I ate for two, but I had only dropped ten pounds by the time he was born. I never lost any weight and became pregnant with my second child. This resulted in my gaining another 50 pounds. So I gained 59 kilograms (130 pounds) between the two!

I was waiting to be accepted into the Medifast program when my second kid was 10 months old. They followed a liquid diet that they checked once a week with blood testing and nutrition courses. I went to the initial testing, but I had a stomach pain the whole time. I felt terrible when I came home and had a searing ache in my stomach. I went to the hospital eventually and remained for a battery of examinations. I underwent surgery and developed pancreatitis as a result of it. My whole body had been poisoned, and the doctor informed me that I would have died if I hadn’t gone to the hospital right away. I spent three weeks there. They didn’t want me to lose weight and let my body heal for 6 months for the first time in my life. In the hospital, I weighed 134 kg (297 lbs).

After a six-month wait, I began the Medifast program at the hospital. In four months, I dropped 44 pounds (not a bite of food, just liquid shakes). Then I ate some grilled chicken, and my diet was officially gone. I was never able to immediately return to work.

After that, my sister married, and I served as her maid of honor. I donned a lovely gown, and everyone complimented me on it. My sister died of a heroin overdose eight months later. I was so depressed and enraged that all I wanted to do was eat. I regained all of my weight and then some.

I spent the next nine years starving myself and losing weight, only to gain it all back. I was admitted to the hospital in 1991 with a hernia in my neck. I had to undergo emergency surgery five days before Christmas. My left side is numb up to my knee because they delayed so long to perform.

Then, in 1992, I divorced, lost 100 pounds, and relocated to Las Vegas to begin a new life and reconnect with my family. My sons were 14 and 16 at the time, and they were strapped for cash. My life was busy as a single mother and nail technician. I was able to reduce my weight to 79kg and felt great.

I was still overweight, but I believed I could live with it and be content. Before meeting my present spouse, I lived in Vegas for a year. I dropped another 14 pounds while we were apart for a time. It was, after all, simply another famine. This, as you are well aware, is why we acquire weight. I couldn’t eat indefinitely since I was always hungry. I work as a manicurist and have a lot of customers, so I don’t have time to cook. At the beauty shop, we always had a lot of food, so I snacked all day.

I married, we relocated to Southern California, and I was unable to reclaim my manicure license. I spent the whole day at home, doing nothing except eating out of boredom. I gained weight, lost weight, then gained weight again throughout my three years there. I’ve never weighed more than 90 pounds in my whole life. Because I had told myself that I would never weigh more than 91 kg, that’s where I always began my diet.

We came to Oregon in 2002 because my husband was retired and wanted to start a small farm. However, I made the decision to get my manicure license and return to work. I’m a city girl who enjoys meeting new people, and I wanted to do so in my new city. When you don’t have children, I’ve found that going to work is the greatest way to meet new people. Manicures are one of my favorite things.

In 2003, I had another significant back surgery, this time on my lower back. Then I attempted to reduce weight since my doctor stated I had an 80-year-old woman’s back. So, in order to assist my back, I changed my diet. When you work in a beauty salon, on the other hand, there is constantly candy and people bring a lot of pastries. I ate, as you may have imagined. So, throughout the course of 12 years, the weight fluctuated every two years. Even today, I can’t believe I’ve tried so many bizarre diets.

I reduced to 70kg in 2014, but my back became so terrible that I was continuously cramping. Because I had severe scoliosis, I leaned to the right. I had another back surgery in September 2014. My whole back is now held together by screws and rods. With the exception of a few customers I service at home, I’ve chosen to retire. I gained 197 pounds (89 kg) over my two years at home and had a doctor’s visit in December 2016. My doctor informed me that I had pre-diabetes, which came as no surprise to me. Everyone in my father’s family was diabetic or died as a result of diabetes problems. My mother had hypoglycemia for the most of her life. In elementary school, I was tested for diabetes.

During the final month of 2016, I researched all I could on this kind of diet that I could get my hands on. I discovered the website and proceeded to view as many movies as I could. After reading so many success stories, I was motivated.

I was all set to start working on January 3rd, 2017. It wasn’t easy the first month, but I never ate anything that wasn’t on the menu (and still don’t). I’m going to keep things simple. After losing 6 kg in the first month, I went two months without losing any weight. I didn’t lose weight because I believed I’d been used to this way of eating after abusing my body for so long. Six months after I began, I went back to the doctor, and she was extremely happy with me. I shed approximately 40 pounds and my blood sugar fell to 75 mg/dL (4.2 mmol/L). I discontinued my blood pressure medication and felt better than I had in years. After a year, I had dropped 28 pounds and had achieved my target weight of 61 pounds. With the ketogenic diet, I’ve discovered a new way to appreciate and respect my body, and I’ll continue eating this way for the rest of my life.
