Does Sugar-Free Gum Break a Fast? —

Sugar-free gum is among the most commonly consumed foods and is quite popular. People chew gum to help them concentrate, relieve stress, help them breathe, and so on. Although it is largely considered a healthy product, some people are concerned about the negative effects of sugar-free gum. Is it safe to consume? Should you avoid it? While there is no definite answer, here is some information on sugar-free gum and its health effects.

The simple answer is no. Most gum contains plenty of healthy ingredients to keep your digestive system running smoothly on a low-carbohydrate diet. But is it safe to eat gum on a keto diet?

Unsurprisingly, the answer to this question is “yes”. Studies have shown that the sweet taste of sugar affects the calorie burn our bodies produce during exercise. When we consume food with sugar in it, our bodies expect us to eat. Since we’re not, they slow down our metabolism to conserve energy. Our bodies would rather save the calories than burn them off, so we end up burning less calories than expected.

Is it true that sugar-free gums are incompatible with Lent? Is it OK to be unfaithful once a week?

It’s time to ask Dr. Jason Fung some questions regarding intermittent fasting and low-carb diets:

Is it OK to use sugar-free chewing gum during Lent?

I didn’t have breakfast since I was fasting. I’m concerned that the intestines may unintentionally obstruct my message. Everyone has a different opinion!

Thank you so much, Anna.

Yes, sugar-free gum is technically prohibited during Lent. However, the quantity of sugar alcohol in gum is so small that it is unlikely to make a difference. Move on if you’re good with gum. Give up if you’re not receiving the outcomes you’re hoping for. But, unless you chew a lot of gum, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

LCHF with intermittent fasting on a single day

Is it preferable to have one indulgence day a week if I follow the LCHF diet and alternate fasting days?

Tony, thank you so much.

Infidelity days are not advised unless they enable you to stick to a tighter diet the rest of the time. Some do, while others do not. I strongly advise against having a clean day.

Jason Fung, M.D.

If you’ve ever tried to fast without eating solid food, you know how hard it is. The lack of food, combined with the uncomfortable feeling of not being able to access food, makes it difficult to focus on other things. It can also be very challenging to fast for a long period of time. For example, it can be very hard to fast for 24 hours or longer. For some people, it’s even hard to fast for 13 hours..
