Sonoran Hot Dog | Mexican Recipes

Sonoran Hot Dog is a blend of your favorite flavors of Mexico. It is a quick and easy recipe, which can be made in minutes, and is perfect for a quick lunch on the go or a quick evening snack.

The original Sonoran hot dog recipe has been attributed to the Mexican immigrant community of Tucson, located in Arizona. It has been a staple of the local cuisine since the early 1900’s and is a popular street food that is enjoyed by many people.

Sonoran hot dogs are a favorite of many Sonorans. They are a mild style of Mexican sausage, traditionally served in restaurants and at hot dog stands. The name is derived from the city of Sonora, a desert region of North America.

Hot Dogs from Sonoras are bacon-wrapped hot dogs with a plethora of toppings for a fresh take on the classic hot dog.

This famous Mexican hot dog can be customized with a variety of Mexican-inspired toppings, making it ideal for a sonoran dog build-your-own experience.

Because everyone can select their own toppings, these hot dogs are a favorite at cookouts and family gatherings.

What is a Sonoran Hot Dog?

It’s a simple process that involves wrapping a slice of bacon around a hot dog link. If you’re preparing these for a party, wrap all of the hot dogs in plastic wrap and store them in the refrigerator until ready to grill.

Before grilling, I suggest placing them in the fridge for a few minutes to firm up.

To prevent the bacon from unraveling, cook the hot dogs with the seam side down on the grill. Warm the hot dogs over indirect heat before placing them over direct heat to crisp the bacon.

The Add-Ons

It’s here that the magic occurs! With the toppings, you may be as creative as you want, but I’ll go through some of the fundamentals and choices.

You may use diced tomatoes or store-bought pico de gallo.

Chopped White Onion- For even more flavor, use grilled sliced onions.

Pinto beans, sometimes known as buttery Peruvian beans, are a kind of bean.

Guacamole or sliced avocado

Crema de Mexico, often known as sour cream, is a kind of Mexican sour cream. You’ll also come across mayonnaise on occasion.

Ketchup- There aren’t many ketchup alternatives, but you can make flavored ketchup.

Pickled jalapenos (or pickled onions) for a milder flavor.

This may seem to be excessive for a hot dog, but believe me when I say it complements each other well. Preparing all of the toppings ahead of time and having them ready to go before grilling the hot dogs is my recommendation.

The Buns

You’ll need a sturdy dish to keep everything together with all of these toppings. Soft bolillo rolls are used in Mexico. You may occasionally get them at Mexican stores, but if not, use a high-quality, robust hot dog bun.

To get them nice and toasty, gently reheat them on the grill shortly before serving.
